Katerina Steenkamp seldom goes out. From her study she watches the mountain beyond the window in every light, while news of brutal violence and poverty keeps reaching her. Her journeys happen online and in her head: on a dating site called WAYOO she talks to suitors who pull her into their esoteric passions, and some of these chats lead to comic meetings. Her brother Daan, absorbed in the family's forebears, urges her to try to reach the ancestors and the dead she loved, and old wounds surface, among them the abuse her mother suffered as a girl at the hands of a doctor. Outside, a ragged, troubled man she calls "the flaneur" roams the neighbourhood; another waits for a craft from the night sky; an old woman thinks back over the man she married and her three sisters.
