After a break-up the painter Niek Steyn moves to Cape Town and befriends Marthinus Scheepers over a stray pig; then his tenant vanishes and a rich artist bids for his home. Meanwhile a Stellenbosch scholar with a cleft lip, writing on the Olivier brothers’ art, sees a killing, and a gaunt stranger soon makes her an odd offer.
