Grzegorz, a theatre director and playwright of about forty, leaves his comfortable Warsaw flat to visit his mother in Białystok, whom he has not seen for months. She looks and feels unwell; he insists on hospital, and the diagnosis leaves no hope. The visit stretches on, and he returns to childhood memories, such as his parents' quarrels over money, his grandmother and his choice to study theatre instead of medicine. Nobody here is happy: the mother suffered with the father, the son with them all, and now, alone, he suffers with himself.
