Wounded on a southern front in the Pacific War, a young soldier is taken to a makeshift field hospital on an island where heavy fighting has raged. Life there feels like a gap in the war. He bargains with islanders for scarce food and keeps one of the bones from the hand of Sanada, a comrade killed by disease. Men around him waste away and rot without ever fighting anyone, and he keeps telling himself that this is war as well.
