Vibeke has recently settled with her son Jon, who is about to turn nine, in a remote northern town. On the eve of his birthday, with a travelling fair in town, the boy heads off alone to peddle raffle tickets for the local athletics club while his mother goes to borrow books. Over a freezing night their paths diverge, each absorbed in a private world, and a sense of dread slowly builds.
