Vladan spends an idyllic childhood in Pula as the son of a Slovenian mother and a Serbian officer of the Yugoslav People's Army. It ends in 1991, when his father is called to the front. The family falls apart: Vladan and his mother, who never recovers from the shock, move first to his father's relatives in Slavonia and then to Ljubljana. For years he believes his father was killed in the war. More than twenty years later, browsing the internet by chance, he discovers that the man is very much alive and wanted by the war crimes tribunal in The Hague. Vladan sets out on a painful journey to understand how a loving father became the killer of defenceless civilians, while the gulf between him and his mother keeps widening.
