A novel of intertwined stories about Aleksandar and Jana, Vesna and Safet, Jadran and Anja, and others. Above all it is about Jadran, a man in his thirties who, after the death of his grandfather Aleksandar Đorđević, assembles the links between these stories to understand his own. He cannot understand why Anja walked out of their life together and away from their son Marko, so he tries to explain other departures: his grandfather's year in Egypt, which changed his world for good, and his death, apparently helped by a suspicious bottle of pills; his grandmother Jana's slow retreat into dementia; his father Safet's disappearance from Ljubljana in the first year of the Yugoslav wars; and his mother Vesna's inexplicable anger at her father and her silent disappointment in her husband.
