Letiția Arcan wants a way out of a dull family life; Sorin Olaru, her ambitious colleague at the Institution, is looking for love. In 1970s Romania their affair has to stay secret: everything is under surveillance, and Letiția’s growing paranoia makes her feel watched by a huge eye. Suspicion creeps into Sorin too, who comes to doubt everything, even the woman he loves. Through the intertwined stories of the people close to them, the novel spans half a century, from Antonescu’s dictatorship through the hard Stalinist years under Gheorghiu-Dej to Ceaușescu, a history in which lives, careers and love itself are always provisional.
