Gerður, Mæja, Rannveig, Snæsól, Kristín and Linda differ in age, background and position, and each gets a chapter, written by one of the six members of the Svikaskáld collective. Every chapter sets a present-day scene, such as an old woman in a doctor's waiting room, against memories that formed her. Gradually links between the women emerge: each is, in her own way, a difficult woman who resists the roles assigned to her.
