The lives of Anita and Giuseppe Garibaldi, and their republican campaigns in southern Brazil, for Uruguay's independence and for the unification of Italy, form the backdrop. At the front stands a minor figure, Costa, a mixed-race man, who travels alongside the reader and confides in them. Through him the novel is free to imagine and speculate while keeping to the historical record.
