Just before the Second World War, the young engineer Julian Spransky is building a bridge over the river Mura at Petanjci. For him the work is a way of taking revenge on the river that marked the fate of his parents, and his own. In Murska Sobota he falls in love with Zinaida Kozlov, but their love turns out to be impossible, and the story also reveals what became of his parents, Elica and Ivan, whose fate was left open in the earlier book. As war approaches, the retreating Yugoslav army destroys the bridge before the advancing German troops.
