In Prekmurje during the First World War, Elica Sreš, a young woman of nearly twenty-three who has never wanted a man, walks among the white-clad maidens at a countess's funeral. There Ivan Spransky, twelve years older, notices her, walks her home and returns Sunday after Sunday until she falls in love. Officially he supervises the river Mura; in secret he grows rich by exploiting the gold panners and by smuggling. After the wedding they move into a large house in Murska Sobota, where Elica has to learn to be a lady. Ivan becomes ever more domineering, and rumours of an earlier wife begin to surface. The story is told in three novellas, framed by the testimony of their son.
