Late one night a policeman and a policewoman bring Roxy, aged twenty-seven, the news: her husband has died at the wheel, and his trainee, who was in the passenger seat, died too; neither had clothes on. Beyond a little girl, a house and a car, he leaves her his assistant, a nanny and a humiliating end to their marriage. Relatives try to look after her. Roxy, though, is hunting for someone to blame rather than for solace, and on a whim she drives south towards France, taking the toddler, the nanny and the assistant along.
