Elisabeth and her grown daughter Coco see each other rarely; about all they have in common is a hairdresser. Elisabeth, a poor mother but a reliable worker in a framing shop, mentions on a chance meeting that she is seriously ill and will not live long. Coco is adrift: she abandoned her degree in Russian, and the older man she lives with, whom she met over the washing machines, plans to leave. Convinced she must see her mother through to the end, though Elisabeth would rather die on her own terms, Coco loses herself in alcohol and in sex with strangers, and mother and daughter grow oddly close.
