Brief but crowded with voices, the novel gathers the family of Marcel, whose harsh choice in the Second World War sealed his fate; his own voice reaches them years later through what he wrote home while fighting in the East. A daughter of the Flemish farming family tells of her brother, who never came back, and of their mother, and the book follows how the war still echoes through later generations in the Flemish countryside.
