The day Gagarin circles the Earth, Paulo and Eduardo, twelve, sons of a railway worker and a butcher, find a murdered woman by a pond. Grilled roughly by the police, they are let go once the dead woman's husband, a timid dentist, owns up. The boys cannot believe such a weak man was capable of it, and with an elderly resident of the town's home for the aged, once jailed by Vargas, they look into it themselves. What they find is sexual violence, racism, graft and the cynicism of the old landowning bosses who still run the place.
