Avraham Avraham, an inspector with the Holon police, is tired of family-violence files and hopes for cases on a grander scale. On a single day he gets two. Someone abandons a newborn girl in a holdall at a hospital entrance, and a suspect is arrested within hours; Avraham, unwilling to listen to her account, puts his energy into the other file, a Swiss visitor who has vanished from a Bat Yam hotel and turns out to have travelled under more than one name on a fake passport. Both inquiries take him nearer to his own life and also far away, as far as Paris, a city he knows from the crime fiction he loves, and confront him with acquaintances he believed he understood and with figures whose existence is doubtful, until he must face a question about his own conduct.
