Veronika Zarnik is a young, self-absorbed and eccentric woman from Ljubljana's bourgeoisie who cares mainly for her comfort and amusement, even in wartime. She never appears directly: five narrators who knew her, each continuing the story of the last, try to recall her. Her former lover, a Serbian cavalry officer of the royal Yugoslav army, remembers her from a prison camp in 1945; her frail old mother waits in terror and hope for her daughter to come home; a German army doctor tells of the war more than of her; the family's housekeeper finds herself at the centre of events; and a partisan who was once a farmhand and secretly longed for her has the last word. The novel draws on the true story of a couple who owned Strmol Castle.
