Janez Lipnik, an archivist in Ljubljana, comes across two sets of papers: the recollections of Aleksij Grgurević, a serial lover whose international career as a seducer began in Slovenia during the Second World War, and the memoir of Ivanka K., a simple nurse at a psychiatric hospital. His curiosity soon goes far beyond the usual. He searches the archive, then his own distant memories, and finds that his schoolteacher Zala, whom he loved as a boy after the war, was the lover of the Home Guard officer Aleksij. Unpleasant memories of his own father, a survivor of Auschwitz, surface too. Throughout runs a folk tale from the Pohorje hills his mother told him, about a hero who climbs a nameless tree into another world.
