The novel is an 'omnibus' in three uneven parts. In the first, Daniel, an elderly conductor, confesses his life. In the second, the backbone of the book, his listener steps onto the stage: Rudi Stupar, a young man from a small town in Vojvodina who never became the actor he meant to be. The short third part is an appendix in which the characters who have passed through the novel speak in their own voices, until then unheard, and settle accounts with Rudi. Built from finely observed everyday details, it is also a self-ironic portrait of the petty bourgeois.
