Decades ago a fire broke out in the tunnels of a coalfield, and the flames are still burning underground. Margarete and Fritzi are what is left of the youth of a vanishing town. Their inheritance is nothing but an abandoned, devastated region, and earlier events have been handed down only in fragments. But the two sisters refuse to accept this state of things. Determined, they set off on an expedition to explore their own origins, and to search for a long-forgotten river, convinced that only those who know their history can build a hopeful future.
