Hunger, joblessness and civil war in Angola once forced Filomena to part with her little girl, Solange, and send her to Portugal to grow up in the comfortable home of her sister Benedita. Years later, mother and daughter are held together almost only by phone calls, seeing each other face to face just a handful of times. Told in short chapters, mostly through Solange's eyes, their talks are those of two chatterboxes who cannot hear each other, and Solange feels that not knowing her mother's body means not knowing her own. Each weekly call is a brief return to life before the silence comes back.
