In the summer of 1991 a young man comes back to his native village in Lika, not suspecting that the first days of the war will catch him there. He has come home to heal the wounds of an unhappy marriage to a Frenchwoman, with whom he has a daughter in Paris he loves but has long not seen, and he is trying to build a new relationship with Hana, a young woman from Zagreb. When the shells start falling he joins the villagers in digging trenches, standing guard and scouting, though violence repels him; the older men remember that in the previous war their village struck first at the neighbouring one, of a different faith, and they fear revenge. He still seeks the approval of a father who has never been satisfied with him, beside a gentle, loving mother.
