Early one Sunday in June, Radoslav Dyakov, a short-sighted microbiologist, dreams that his neighbour Genadi has been stabbed, then finds him, perhaps murdered, in the lift of their six-storey block on Stamboliyski Boulevard. While the police investigate, three of the residents decide over drinks to find out for themselves whether it was murder or a heart attack, as the rest of the building looks on with scepticism. Told in seventy-five short parts from the neighbours' points of view, among them a lawyer and her daughter Adi, a TV technician, a shopkeeper and a football official, the novel turns a quarrel over an unbuilt fence and talk of politicians, nationalism and emigration into a humorous picture of a divided society.
