Buell Quain was twenty-seven, a protégé of Ruth Benedict, when he died by his own hand in 1939 on his way out of the territory of the Krahô people. Brazil's anthropologists preferred to forget him. More than sixty years later a newspaper piece puts his name in front of the narrator, who becomes obsessed: he hunts through archives for Quain's letters and for a document left by an engineer who befriended him near the end. Why the case grips him so, something to do with his own boyhood in the forest and his father's death, he keeps to himself.
