Two travellers' records alternate: the journal the vanished photographer kept on his wanderings, and the jottings of the envoy retracing his route. On the way they meet Gobi and steppe herders, reindeer people near Russia, camel breeders, a singer of overtone songs, a monk, and a Kazakh who hunts with eagles. Both men meet a nation rediscovering spirituality after decades of communist rule, where invention has rushed in to fill a memory erased by force, and where what is real and what is longed for are hard to tell apart.
