Years after abolition, a clandestine slaver sinks off the Brazilian coast. A few castaways struggle onto a strip of sand swallowed by every rising tide: among them an overseer and an enslaved man, a poor manservant, a cleric, a young scholar, a lady of rank with her girl, and a small black child barely able to walk. The sea that ruled their old lives now offers them another chance, twice each night and twice each day. Walled in by cliffs between sky and ocean, they have carried their remorse and their ghosts with them. To stay alive they must overcome prejudice of race, class, sex and faith, and learn to see through another person's eyes.
