A married couple, Bohumil and Bohumila, move with their mentally disabled son from Prague to a small village in the borderlands to resolve their marital crisis. Over a hot summer they try to fit in, at first blaming small misunderstandings on their own difference and their failure to understand rural life. But lies big and small, strange coincidences and unpleasant incidents pile up, and the sense of threat grows. Their hunch that a large animal circles their cottage at the bottom of a ravine every night strangely matches mysterious leaflets with a fairy tale about a wolf that they find in the local pub. Then one night they return to find the cottage empty: the boy has disappeared.
