Zoks, known as DJ Hobo, spins records in Nišvil, a sprawling provincial city of local madness, escapist myths and southern pathos. Steeped in whisky and in the films and pop culture of the twentieth century, he tells of his descent into the city's mafia underworld, where blackmail, pimping, rounds of score-settling and murders are part of daily life and only force and corruption keep the place from chaos. Hobo has a lyrical, darkly funny eye and a soft heart inside a tough guy's chest, yet he cannot rise above the world he moves in. The novel is a crime story told on the model of a Hollywood saga about hard men, set in the cynicism of Serbia around 2000.
