An unexpected offer from a stranger to act in an experimental film does not start the career that Orest, a bohemian young man from Odesa, might have hoped for. It begins a set of strange relationships in which the stories of the future film's characters, their real-life prototypes and the actors themselves are woven together. The space of the novel is as fragile and mosaic-like as its plot: an Odesa freed of the Soviet and post-Soviet mask of the eternal joker and swaggering gangster, a city of beaches, bars and clubs, of Dovzhenko and Yanovsky, of revolution, freedom, love and art.
