Billed as a paranormal novel, the book joins separate life stories into one whole that seems to call out for an eight-and-a-half-episode screen adaptation. Its material is domestic and political murder, rape and robbery, the corruption of minors and a mysterious severed head, betrayals of ideas and betrayals for an idea, souls pledged to various devils, and punishments that are rarely fair but often terrible. The reader is invited to feel virtuous and morally superior to these unfortunate lovers of capricious Justice, and, by old tradition, to the author who chose to immortalise them.
