Khaled Ma'moun took a job through a mysterious advertisement and now records testimonies, without quite knowing what his work is for. He is drawn into the case of Mustafa Ismail, a former law lecturer who became the most skilful thief of the 1990s, and into two editions of a book about him: a first that turns his story into legend, and an unfinished, more realistic second one based on what Husna, Mustafa's daughter, saw. Between his boss Nabil al-Adl and his mentor, the chess player Fakhri, Khaled shuttles between worlds, and when he decides to return to what he knew, he finds that world has fallen apart.
