The story opens on a morning near the end of the Kurukshetra war. Grieving over the carnage, Draupadi questions her own share in it, and the news that her five sons were killed in the night by Ashwatthama turns her grief to anger at her husbands. When Kunti reveals that Karna was her eldest son, Draupadi is left to wonder what bond might have existed between her and the man she had twice met with scorn. From there she relives her past: lives before this one, the swayamvara and the battle that followed it, the marriage to five brothers forced by a mother's chance words, and the life she builds with them in Indraprastha under rules for sharing her.
