In the early years of the People's Republic, on the Xijiegu grasslands of the Tibetan plateau, a Han journalist heads into the land of a rival tribe, trailed by seven children and the mastiff Gangri Senge. Old blood feuds flare up as the tribe sets out to make the youngsters answer for what their ancestors did, and the reporter and the dog, now friends, try to rescue them. Amid the feud, a mastiff from Shang Ama rises to lead the grassland's dogs. Drawing on accounts from the author's father, the novel shows the courage, loyalty and dignity of Tibet's mastiffs.
