Ignoring the news, a beekeeper known as the Don lives like an ascetic with his bees, his 'girls', on the edge of the village of Nawa. Finding them mutilated, he understands that the turmoil of the world has reached him and that he has a formidable enemy. His search for a way to save them takes him across a country thrown into disarray by its recent revolution, and leads him to seek help as far away as Japan.
