Chu Pingyang, a columnist of the generation born in the 1970s, is preparing to go to Jerusalem for a doctorate and returns to Huajie, the street of his childhood, to sell his house. His story is woven with those of his girlfriend Shu Xiu, of his boyhood friend Yi Chang'an, who makes a living forging papers and is now on the run, and of Qin Fuxiao, whose little brother Jing Tianci died when they were children, a death that still weighs on all of them. Each of them has left home and keeps being pulled back. Chapters named after the characters alternate with Chu's newspaper columns, 'Our Generation', on the anxieties of people who grew up as China rushed into its cities.
