In 1947 the Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan field army makes its long thrust south into the Dabie Mountains. Wang Keyu, a student on her way to Yan'an, passes through the quarters of the 'Night Tiger' regiment, where her playing of the guqin piece 'High Mountains and Flowing Water' brings her to the notice of Qi Jing, the regiment's educated young commander, and she stays on as a culture teacher. Qi, soon a brigade commander, is learned, witty and ambitious; the cavalry messenger Cao Shui'er is tall, fearless and admired by women, but often loses control of himself. The novel follows the three of them, and Qi's wise old warhorse Tanzao, through the campaign, as an unforeseen event threatens to turn a wartime romance to grief.
