Przechodząc przez próg, zagwiżdżę

The girl who narrates has no name, no right to her own body and no say. She is pushed to the margins of adult life, then pulled into the middle of the family drama as a means of blackmail or a prop. It is the 1990s: dreary yards, piano lessons, preparing for first communion. Her mother clings to order and is half with her father, a failed artist who drinks; there are two grandmothers. Nobody explains anything, and adults are strong only in the hand that slaps and the belt buckle. Through language and imagination she reclaims herself, telling of pain but also of pleasure and wonder.
