In the traditional Māori story, told from his side, the hunter Hatupatu is seized by a being who is half woman, half bird, and held in her mountain lair until he gets away. Here that supposed monster, Kurangaituku, speaks for herself. She starts with the birds whose song created her, moves on to the coming of the Song Makers and how they altered everything she knew, and then recalls her life with Hatupatu: how loving him changed what she felt, thought and did, and how badly his betrayal hurt her. Shaped by Māori oral storytelling, her account also tells what she knows of the newly made human world and of the afterlife.
