烟霞里

Written as a year-by-year chronicle, the novel follows Tian Zhuang, born in the 1970s in a small mountain village, through school, work, marriage and motherhood. Her path runs alongside four decades of reform: the market economy, the Shenzhen special zone, people leaving secure jobs to go into business, stock-market fever, the return of Hong Kong, urbanisation, migrant workers and laid-off factory staff. Through the streets, buildings and customs she passes and the people she meets, one woman's life becomes a small museum of the era that shaped her generation.
