Kimiya grew up in the house of the poet and Sufi mystic Jalal al-Din Rumi, who gave her as a wife to his master Shams al-Din Tabrizi, although she was forty-eight years younger than him. A narrator who has known her since she came to the house as a child, fresh from tending her father's sheep, and who loved her, follows her fate and asks the questions history leaves open: why Shams agreed to marry her, why she fell ill so soon after, how she vanished and why Rumi gave her away though he knew she loved his son Ala al-Din.
