The life of a Polissia peasant who in his hundred years outlives five states: the Russian Empire, the Ukrainian People's Republic, Poland, Hitler's Germany and Stalin's Soviet Union. The story runs on three levels: the last year of his first century in the village of Zahorany, the time five years earlier when he saved Olenka, a young drug addict who wandered into his village, and almost the whole twentieth century. There is childhood love, the abduction of a sweetheart promised to another, service in the Polish army, love for a Polish noblewoman, war with the Germans, captivity and war again, and the Ukrainian-Polish massacres. Yakiv waits for Olenka's letter and for his son Artem.
