A 54-year-old man of taste and experience, who has risen to vice-rector of a university, is suddenly struck down by a stroke. His pension as a scholar will be decent, yet it brings him no joy. He has a wife, a daughter and two sons-in-law, a former and a current one, both gifted poets, and a grandson on the way who will bear his name. He has fallen out with his friend the rector, and the stroke came after his last mistress brutally dropped him to marry a foreigner. Once treatment gives him back the use of his body, he returns to his family and to the church, and the city festival on Kyiv's Andriyivsky Descent becomes the stage for his reckoning.
