Simeon Stanimirov, an ageing writer, reluctantly agrees to meet Niya, a young, clever and beautiful journalist who wants to turn a series of interviews with him into a book. The meetings soon become a need, and he falls head over heels for a woman more than thirty years younger, ready for any folly to win her. In front of her recorder he goes back over a life of pleasure, generosity and betrayal, from his boyhood to the fate of his father, an architect broken by his dismissal from the office of another architect, Tomislav Madzharov, whom Simeon attacked in print after 1989. As the past keeps pouncing on the present, the novel looks at old age as an old body with a young heart, and at what may be greater than love: forgiveness.
