The novel begins as a story of family life in Novi Sad, knocked off balance by the history of the 1990s. The narrator is deeply attached to his brother, an eccentric, almost genius figure, and when the brother vanishes he leaves the city and starts again in Canada, among campuses, suburbs and the vast open spaces of the New World. His new life does not free him from the old one: a farewell gift that arrives at his Canadian address confronts him with a fateful test and with what really happened to his brother. Wistful, ironic and funny, it is also a story of self-exile and memory for a whole generation that fled the region in the nineties.
