Before he became a saint, Sebastian commanded the Praetorian Guard that hunted Christians. When he could, he saved them; when he could not, he encouraged them to die for their faith, secretly hoping it would grow stronger through the sacrifices he urged. With this story underneath, the novel examines sacrifice and the delusions around it: of people who believe they are doing good, and who keep others in delusions so that their rescue missions have an audience. It tells of the war of the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia, seen by a child learning his mother tongue in wartime, amid a quiet dread and the hope that what had already happened would not happen, and of present-day delusions in which memories keep changing shape.
