The novel is a mosaic portrait of Belgrade and of one generation in it, seen through five friends. The city is marvellous, dreamt-up and cursed at once, and the friends are bound to it as much as to each other: Boris loves Zora, Milan loves Irina. When war breaks out in 1991, these loves cannot survive what follows, and the decade of upheaval as Yugoslavia falls apart pushes some of the friends to reject the city and others to leave it. Written in short chapters that move between bitter realism, lyricism and surreal images, it is less a chronicle of the war years than a fresco of human madness whose chief victim is Belgrade.
