In 2084 the world is split between poor provinces, joined in a federation of United World States, and the rich City of the Immortals, and five great corporations control everything from oxygen and water to people's dreams. In Montanatown, a city of twenty million somewhere south of the Danube, two brothers go different ways. Miro is a charismatic and successful mafioso; Slav is a misfit, an Orthodox Christian in a world that has forgotten religion and one of the few who can still read. Hoping to escape the ghetto and find people like himself, Slav leaves for the City of the Immortals, where the lawyer Thomas Eliot introduces him to pale, hollow people living in houses made of holograms. In dialogue with Orwell, the novel asks how much we know of our past and future, and how the world will end.
