An old swindler who has gone through life alone receives a totally unexpected caller one night. The visitor is the son he left decades earlier, and in the single night they ever spend together the son attempts a dialogue with his father that becomes a desperate search for meaning. Written like a thriller, with an absurd, Gogolian plot, short sentences and a narrator who reveals himself only late, the novel varies the biblical theme of father and son. Two anti-heroes who reach their aims through lies and tricks become romantic figures in a world where truth and lies have grown relative, and by dawn on a Belgrade pavement the son who had aimed a pistol at his father is holding his head.
