A drummer from a Roma settlement in eastern Slovakia, who will tell the most incredible stories for a few shots of borovička, is the narrator, but at the centre is his best friend Kivader. Kivader always has money for drink and never forgets to buy lottery tickets; his wife Helenka cooks, washes and does the dishes; their son Rudko was born with a big head and little sense, partly because of his father's drinking, and Kivader leaves him behind at a fair. The drummer, whose own wife died in a car crash leaving him a little daughter, spends most of his time in Kivader's kitchen. The settlement is shown without embellishment or stereotypes.
